"To explore, illuminate and utilize the awesome power live music has to help heal body and spirit"
Men were normally not allowed in the woman's section of Kalighat, my guitar was a free pass everywhere.
This young girl never spoke during the time I was there. The sisters told me they think she was forced into prostitution and when they found her she was emaciated and non responsive. The first few times I played for her I made sure I was far enough away so not to made her feel uncomfortable.
The photo depicts a scene uncomfortable for me to remember. The dying man I am standing next to was in so much pain he was screaming uncontrollably. To try to help the best I could, I went over to the man and started making up a song called "The Kalighat Blues".
I see so much in this image. The patients on the ground are more seriously ill than the ones on the second step (normal for Kalighat ). That is verified by observing the photo. Volunteers giving massage and care to the women on the top step, sitting up.
The thoughts I have about this image revolves around the picture of Mother Teresa hanging on the wall. It reads…”Keep the joy of loving God in your heart and share this joy with all you meet and so become an instrument of peace”. That may not be the chosen mission statement for the Magicbox Project but maybe it should be!
Revisiting this scene, I am reminded of how easy it was to be totally in the moment. I am also reminded of the opportunity provided by the guitar. Without it, I would not have been allowed in the woman’s section and would have never met these precious sisters of mine.
I want to reinforce once again that the stories (the vast majority I have not shared) and photos from Calcutta have little to do with the future and direction of the Magicbox Project. They contain the reason for why I am advancing its cause however and the certainty behind my conviction.

One day the powerful combination of love, emphathy and live music will be an accepted and commonly used adjunct to medical treatment, aiding the healing process.
